Our Senior Compliance Officer has completed an international diploma in governance, risk and compliance through ICA. Here she explains how the programme has developed her ability to turn requirements into something both Nobly and our customers can use. A deeper understanding of compliance puts Nobly in the strongest possible position to help customers in regulated industries.

The road to compliance

With a background as a business economist, a career headlined by compliance was not the obvious path for Emilie. But experience from the car industry, anti-money laundering at Danske Bank and a role in compliance and sustainability at Norlys paved the way to her position today as Senior Compliance Officer at Nobly.

Nine months deep in compliance

Over the past nine months, alongside her work at Nobly, Emilie has completed a programme in governance, risk & compliance, adding a certification to her extensive practical experience.

The diploma is offered by the International Compliance Association (ICA) and covers the full breadth of the field: from the history of the rules and the relationship with the authorities to conduct, risk management and the role of the compliance function.

Emilie explains why she took it: “I wanted a stronger foundation in my knowledge of governance and compliance, so I could better understand the underlying risks where legislation, regulations and customer requirements meet.”

Emilie’s manager, Kenneth Fossum, also sees great value in the programme:

The most important thing for us is that our customers trust Nobly and our work with compliance. That trust is something we have to earn every day. This is why we invest in our compliance staff and their professional development, so we keep getting better at understanding the requirements and translating them into practice. Emilie’s diploma is a concrete example of that approach: we build on our experience and strengthen our skills so we can be a strong and credible partner for our customers, says Kenneth Fossum, Head of IT Operations at Nobly.

Reassurance starts with understanding

“It has become clear to me how important it is to understand the technology we work with when I handle compliance. In a company developing AI solutions for document management, compliance cannot sit on the sidelines,” says Emilie.

Our customers in regulated industries are subject to strict requirements for their IT suppliers. That means customers place requirements directly on Nobly, and that is exactly what Emilie translates.

She says this about why it matters:

The most important thing is that the programme has strengthened my ability to turn requirements from customers and authorities into something the organisation can understand and live up to. That creates value and reassurance for our customers.

Does it change anything day to day?

At Nobly, the focus has shifted from implementing compliance to driving it. The question is no longer only “do we have a control?” but “does it still work, do we follow up, and is management on board?”

That ties closely to what Emilie has taken from the programme: that it is crucial to talk openly about risk and to involve management.

A greater understanding of why the controls exist also brings a more critical eye to compliance.

It is not necessary to understand every control – but I do need to understand why we have them. That way I can judge what needs acting on and what is already covered by existing controls, says Emilie.

Emilie is a good example of how some of the most important roles in a company are the ones that make sure everything hangs together. For our customers, that work is exactly what makes it safe to place their documents in our hands.
